Daecheon Beach is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Korea, located only two hours away from Seoul in the city of Boryeong (West Sea). Global recognition came to Daecheon when it became the main venue of the Boryeong Mud Festival: tons of mud from the nearby natural mudflats are transported to the beach every year in July and put in the countless inflatable baths, slides, and courses. For ten days Daecheon beach becomes the place for a mega party, filled with music, laughter, and chorus of cheerful voices. However, the rest 355 days a year the beach continues to attract visitors with its fun summer activities, all-year-round festivals, tasty food, and beautiful nature.
The beach annually attracts over 10 million visitors from all over Korea. However, with its 100m width and 3.5km length, it still offers a relaxing and comfortable space for its visitors.
As any Korean beach, Daecheon beach offers a variety of water sports and leisure activities. Special features of Daecheon, apart from the annual Mud Festival, are the fun Zip Trek and Sky Bike activities at the Daecheon Tower.
One of the most popular water sports in the world, motorboat does not require any special skills and is a pleasurable experience for everyone. It was one of the first attractions introduced in Daecheon, and even though the beach now offers other types of sports - sailing, jet skiing, bananas, and surfing, - motorboat still remains the undying classic.
Jet Ski is one of the three major water sports along with water skiing and windsurfing. It was first developed in Japan around 1973 and introduced to big sport during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Since then jet ski became one of the favorite summer activities all over the country. In comparison to the motorboat, the jet ski design makes it a more dynamic and safe watercraft suitable for all levels of skill. Even a total beginner can enjoy a high-speed ride on a 2-3 seater vehicle without professional help and lengthy training period.
The banana boat is a popular recreational water sport in which a 250-horsepower speedboat pulls an inflated banana-shaped boat. Three to five people can ride it at once and enjoy the twists and turns of the boat over the waves. Sometimes the boat captain tries hard to overturn the passengers into the water, and if he uses the centrifugal force well, the experience will turn into even more refreshing fun (all passengers wear life jackets and are at no risk of drowning).
First introduced in California, USA, in 1967, the surf consisted of a board and a 360-degree rotating sail and was called "boarding". Since then it has become a globally enjoyed water sport due to its dynamic construction and easy usage - all you need is water surface and some wind. Windsurfing has joined the official sports games since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and a surfing World Cup has been established. At Daecheon Beach, the current national windsurfer Kim Ho-gon receives his training and also gives lessons to newcomers. The class is held daily from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00.
Fee: 4-day class Adult 200,000 won / Student 120,000 won; Rental 3 hours 30,000 won.
